How To Learn A New Language

Have you ever traveled to a different country and found yourself lost in translation? Everything around you is spoken and written in a different language that you can’t understand, and you end up feeling like an outsider. To communicate with people from different countries and learn about their culture, it’s important to learn their language, even if it’s only a few words and phrases. This way, you’ll be able to make meaningful connections abroad and discover a whole new world.

Learning a language is no easy task, but it’s definitely attainable by following these tips:

1) Download Language Apps

If you find yourself on your phone not knowing what to do, spend your free time learning a new language by downloading a language app! There’s a wide selection of apps with different styles and approaches to teaching languages. You can download free apps, such as Duolingo, or paid apps, such as Pimsleur to get started. While you may not become completely fluent in another language right away, you’ll learn the basic vocabulary and phrases needed to feel more comfortable and expand your knowledge of another language through the use of these apps. If you find that these language apps don’t work best for you, try watching YouTube videos. There are fun and interactive YouTube videos with locals from different countries that effectively teach you common phrases and words that you’ll definitely hear on your next trip abroad.

2) Watch Foreign Films and Listen to Music

What better way to pick up a lot of useful words and phrases in a different language than by watching an interesting foreign movie or listening to international music! Just pick the language of your choice, find a film that interests you, and use the subtitles to translate what is being said. If movies don’t work for you, try listening to music in different languages. This way, you can hear the language being spoken and get a better understanding of pronunciation. As well as this, many common words and phrases will be repeated in movies and songs, which will help you memorize them.

3) Travel

It’s important to immerse yourself in a new language in order to pick it up more easily. Interacting with people from a different country is one of the best ways to learn a new language. When you become familiar with a certain country and its people, you develop a better understanding of their values, mindset, and traditions. Travel helps you gain an appreciation for the language you’re learning and motivates you to make connections with people who don’t speak your language.

4) Practice Practice Practice

The only way you’ll gain the confidence needed to carry out a conversation in a different language is to practice speaking in that language. If you have friends that speak the language that you’re studying, ask them to try talking to you in that language. This way, you can test your knowledge of common words and phrases and see if you can apply them by building sentences in that language. You can always meet new people that speak the language of your choice and try to interact with them.
